A water flow control is a device used to regulate the water flow in plumbing systems. The ball valve can be directly operated (via handle) or indirectly operated (by actuating a lever, chain, or plug). Ball valves are typically made of brass and feature two ports that enable water to pass through them while completely blocking any other material from going through. A ball valve that has been installed upside down will not close because water pressure forces it open; no water would be able to get past the water stops. To fix this problem, simply turn the valve right side up and try again. In most cases where you have unwanted water coming into your home through pipes inside the walls of your home, a combination of a ball valve and shutoff valve should fix the problem. A gate valve allows flow in only one direction by operating like sliding doors that open and close. Gate valves are typically used for on/off control. Water flows through the center port, and when it is turned off the water stops flowing anywhere into or out of the pipeline because both ports are closed. Gate valves come in several different styles including butterfly (also called the diaphragm), globe, plug, swing check (or angle stop), and bellow (also called radial-lift). The globe valves are typically used in water supply applications because they prevent the entry of sediment or contaminants.
